a thin stick and a split half of a thicker stick.
The Fireplow set is a split-open stick, such as the stalk of a sotol flower, and a second thinner stick. The thin stick is moved back and forth in the channel of the pith of the thicker one.
Fireplows were used in the American Southwest and South. This is a different “lineage” of technology from the pyrite/flint percussion spark system. In a friction firestarter, two pieces of wood are rubbed together to produce an ember.
